Advantages: Safety, Easier Maintenance, and Faster Adjustment. To make coarse tracking adjustments on early model Kimwood Smithway and Control Master sanders it was necessary to shut the head off and bring it to a complete stop before making adjustments. Two people were required to "track in a belt.": one person to loosen the tracking cylinder arm while another person inserted a pry bar to actually make the adjustment. This was necessary to keep the tracking cylinder arm from becoming completely out of adjustment with the oscillating pivot caused from the tension of the abrasive belt. The On-line Tracking Adjustment Retrofit allows all on-line tracking to be completed by only one person, while the head is running. There are two different mechanical adjustments that can be made on the sanders when installing new abrasive belts. One is considered a fine adjustment and the other a coarse adjustment. The fine adjustment usually consists of minor adjustments to the tracking air cylinder: where it starts and where it stops. The coarse adjustment consists of repositioning the tracking cylinder arm on the oscillating pivot. Once a head has been "tracked in", the fine adjustment is usually the only adjustment that will be required. However, if the tracking roll unit has been disassembled for some reason (such as maintenance), a coarse adjustment can often be required. The On-line Tracking Adjustment Retrofit is an assembly designed for quick and easy coarse adjustments on the fly.
